Through the Ambassador’s Eyes: The Philippines, a Land of Golden Pearls and Endless Smiles

The Philippine Ambassador shares his advice on where to find luxury and adventure. Discover a land of 7,000 islands, perfect beaches, and incredible hospitality.

Relations between the Czech Republic and the Philippines have been warmer than ever in recent years, a fact underscored by the recent 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. This friendship was celebrated with a series of mutual high-level visits, including Prime Minister Fiala’s trip to the Philippines and Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s visit to Prague. On the occasion of this anniversary, we spoke about the land of a thousand islands with the most qualified person to do so – the Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the Czech Republic, His Excellency Eduardo Martin R. Meñez.

His Excellency Eduardo Martin R. Meñez

According to the Ambassador, one of the most precious Filipino cultural traits is the renowned hospitality and joyful nature of the local people. “Filipinos are very happy people. We like to sing, we like to dance, we like to have parties,” the Ambassador explains. This positive energy, which stems from a deep resilience and an ability to face hardship with a smile, is infectious and provides one of the most powerful experiences for visitors.

When asked about the most valuable Filipino tradition, the Ambassador is clear. “I would say it is our ability to face adversity with a smile,” he explains. “Despite the fact that we are often plagued by natural disasters, we have a very cheerful outlook on life,” he adds.

The Philippines is an immensely rich country, not only culturally but also naturally, which is reflected in its exports. In addition to world-famous dried mangoes and coconut products, the Philippines, specifically the island of Palawan, is home to one of the world’s rarest treasures – the golden South Sea pearl. These pearls, renowned for their size and unique warm hue, are considered a national treasure and the pinnacle of luxury jewellery production. Other premium exports include high-grade tuna, which is also destined for the demanding Japanese market, and furniture and accessories from world-renowned designers.

Luxury in Paradise: Palawan and Boracay

For readers who seek the highest standard of service and accommodation, the Ambassador has a clear recommendation. “In the rankings of the best beaches in the world, compiled by Condé Nast for example, two of our areas are always in the top ten: Palawan and Boracay,” he says. These two destinations are synonymous with a luxury holiday. While Palawan is home to exclusive boutique resorts, such as the world-famous Amanpulo, and offers more peace and privacy, the island of Boracay combines beach relaxation with a rich nightlife, restaurants, and bars. In both locations, as well as in other tourist hubs like Cebu, you will find branches of the world’s most prestigious hotel chains, from Shangri-La to Fairmont.

An Unforgettable Adventure

The Philippines, however, is much more than just a place for relaxing on the beach. It is a true playground for adventurers. “It depends on what type of adventure a person is looking for,” the Ambassador smiles, before adding several tips. On the island of Palawan, you can explore a mysterious underground river by boat, in a cave system full of bats. Near the island of Cebu, you can swim with gentle giants – whale sharks, which feed only on plankton. Adrenaline lovers will appreciate white-water rafting or the long ziplines stretched between islands. An absolutely unique experience is a visit to an island where imported giraffes and zebras have been living freely since the 1970s.

The Culture of a Thousand Islands and Smiles

The true wealth of the Philippines lies in its cultural diversity. “Because we are divided into many islands, we have a very diverse culture. We have 110 ethno-linguistic groups,” the Ambassador explains. This diversity is evident in everything – from different languages and dialects to the more than 300 festivals that take place across the country each year. Filipinos are proud of their culture and enjoy sharing it with visitors. “A family that may not be very wealthy will, when they have a visitor, make sure to serve them the best food on the best plates they have, just to make the other person feel at home,” the Ambassador adds.

He believes the Philippines offers everything a traveller or business person could wish for, from a rich culture and adventure to first-class resorts and shopping centres. As the Ambassador himself concludes: “I think it’s just a matter of discovery.” And the embassy is ready to help anyone who wishes to learn more about this fascinating archipelago with their discovery.
