In Goodwood, the cradle of the world’s most iconic cars, a unique commission has seen the light of day: the Rolls-Royce Phantom Arabesque. This singular automobile pays homage to the architectural heritage of the Middle East and simultaneously marks a world premiere – for the very first time in the marque’s history, the bonnet is adorned with a laser-engraved pattern inspired by the traditional Mashrabiya motif.
The Phantom Arabesque was commissioned by Private Office Dubai, one of five exclusive Rolls-Royce ateliers serving the world’s most discerning clientele. Its inspiration lies in the geometric beauty of Mashrabiya – wooden lattice screens that, in traditional Arabian homes, provide privacy while allowing light and air to flow, and stand as a symbol of the region’s artisanal mastery.
Laser Engraving: A New Dimension of Luxury
The development of this unique technique took five years and draws on the Italian tradition of sgraffito – layering and revealing colours. The bonnet is first painted in a deep shade, then covered with several layers of lacquer, and finally finished with a lighter topcoat. Into this layer, the Mashrabiya motif is engraved with extreme precision using a laser, creating a sculptural effect that invites both touch and gaze. Each detail is then meticulously hand-sanded to achieve absolute perfection. This approach not only ensures exceptional durability, but also a fascinating interplay of light across the car’s surface.
Design That Tells a Story
The Phantom Arabesque is finished in a combination of Diamond Black and Silver, with a hand-painted coachline featuring the Mashrabiya motif, an illuminated Pantheon grille, and elegant 22-inch wheels. The interior is dominated by a gallery crafted from Blackwood and Bolivar, again referencing traditional Arabian patterns. Details such as hand-embroidered motifs on the headrests, a starlit headliner in the doors, and illuminated treadplates complete the atmosphere of refinement and tranquillity.
