Back to Basics

This isn’t a holiday – it’s a transformation. The Sri Lankan resort Santani is where the search for balance begins.

The word sustainability is used in every context in today’s world, mostly in relation to our planet. But what if its true form begins with ourselves? The Sri Lankan wellness resort Santani is built on this very idea – on human sustainability. Its name, which means ‘in harmony with’ in Sanskrit, captures not only its location in the misty mountains and tea plantations near the city of Kandy, but above all, its mission: to help guests find balance between body, mind, and spirit. It is this almost academic approach that sets it apart from the rest.

After months of constant pressure, I felt I needed more than a holiday. I needed a restart. When I didn’t know where to go, I turned to Robert Paul from Luxusni-Dovolena.cz. His answer was immediate and precise: “You don’t just want to switch off. You want to learn how to function better. Go to Santani.” And today, after two weeks spent at this Sri Lankan resort, I can confirm his words down to the last detail. This transformation begins the moment you step into a space designed according to the principles of the so-called ‘architecture of silence’. Minimalist pavilions and glass walls completely open the interiors up to the surrounding lush greenery, allowing the mind to find peace.

The core of the philosophy here is the fusion of contemporary knowledge with the thousand-year-old wisdom of Ayurveda. My stay began with an in-depth consultation with a doctor who, based on the ancient method of pulse reading, determined my unique constitution and created an individual plan for me. This included not only treatments in the three-storey spa, such as Ayurvedic massages, herbal steam treatments to release muscle tension, and the deeply relaxing Shirodhara treatment, in which a thin stream of warm oil flows onto the forehead, but also a specific diet.

At Santani, gastronomic delights are based on the concept of Rasa Haya, or the six tastes, which harmonise the body from within without compromising on the standards of haute cuisine. Instead of a classic menu, the chef creates a menu for each guest based on their goals, and so my plate featured a mix of traditional Sri Lankan dishes, such as curry with organic vegetables or a banana blossom salad with coconut and tamarind, with inspiration from global fine dining. Moreover, most of the ingredients are grown right on the resort’s grounds in organic quality.

However, don’t imagine Santani as an ascetic sanatorium – no one here is forced to detox, unless they want to, and meat and alcohol are served as a matter of course. Guests have freedom of choice in every respect. The surrounding landscape, interwoven with plantations, forests, and waterfalls, is perfect for hiking or mountain biking. I went on a trip to the adjacent villages, and visiting the ancient temples was a truly magical experience. The resort offers not a temporary escape from reality, but rather a compass for your return – stronger, calmer, and in harmony.

Santani is different. It wasn’t just about rest, but about a deeper understanding of how my own body and mind work. It is an experience that stays with you long after you leave. If you too are looking for a place that will teach you how to find balance, Santani is the right choice. And I can add that you can turn with absolute confidence to the team at Luxusni-Dovolena.cz.
