Dolce & Gabbana Compose an Ode to the Eternal City

The designer duo transformed Rome into one grand stage. The new Alta Moda and Alta Sartoria collections pay homage to antiquity, cinematic history, and ecclesiastical art.

For a few days, Rome became the epicentre of the fashion world. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana hosted a spectacular celebration of Alta Moda and Alta Sartoria, in which the Italian capital became both the backdrop and the very essence of their new creations. Amidst the ruins of the Roman Forum and beneath the angelic statues of Ponte Sant’Angelo, a breathtaking spectacle unfolded, attended by stars such as Cher and Isabella Rossellini.

The Alta Moda women’s collection, presented in the heart of ancient Rome, paid direct homage to the city’s history and art. Golden corsets recalled gladiator armour, while long gowns bore the inscription S.P.Q.R. and the symbol of the Capitoline Wolf. Roman architecture came to life on skirts and coats, where motifs of the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountain appeared through the technique of intarsia, its water rendered in cascading silk chiffon. The designers also paid tribute to the golden age of Roman cinema, to Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and the Cinecittà studio, which made Italy famous throughout the world.

The Alta Sartoria men’s collection show took place on the Ponte Sant’Angelo, drawing inspiration from the city’s ecclesiastical iconography. Corsets sculpted like marble statues of saints, drapery evoking liturgical vestments, and ubiquitous crosses adorned jackets and coats. Dolce & Gabbana delved into the opulent aesthetic of the Vatican, transforming the garments of popes and cardinals into symbols of modern masculinity.

The Italian duo’s overall vision was completed by the Alta Gioielleria high jewellery collection, which featured pendants with micro-mosaics of Roman scenery, miniatures of ancient statues crafted from marble dust, and opulent gemstones.
