Tennis is a sport that demands absolute precision, perfect coordination, and solid ground underfoot. However, British tennis stars Jamie Murray and Laura Robson decided to break that last rule and rewrite history. On the roofs of two moving Lexus NX cars, they played the longest tennis rally, earning an entry in the Guinness World Records. During an incredible 101 shots, the cars reached a speed of nearly 47 km/h.
The entire event took place at Duxford airfield, with preparation and safety overseen by acclaimed special effects specialist Marc Cass, who has worked on series such as James Bond, Harry Potter, and Star Wars. The two Lexus NX cars underwent special modifications. Robust aluminum platforms were attached to the roofs of the vehicles using rails and additional straps for added safety. The tennis players themselves, seven-time Grand Slam doubles champion Jamie Murray and Olympic medalist Laura Robson, were secured with special harnesses, while experienced stunt drivers took the wheels.
Starring in the record-breaking event was the second-generation Lexus NX SUV, which has been on the market since 2022. The vehicle is offered in two hybrid variants. The NX 350h is a classic hybrid with 243 horsepower, available with either front-wheel drive or the intelligent E-FOUR all-wheel-drive system. The NX 450h+ is an efficient plug-in hybrid with an 18.1 kWh lithium-ion battery, allowing it to travel up to 98 km in emission-free electric mode. Unlike competing designs, once the battery is depleted, the Lexus plug-in hybrid system operates like a conventional hybrid, maintaining a similar level of performance and low average fuel consumption.
“Tennis is a sport that requires precision, skill, and excellent coordination, so playing a rally on the roofs of cars moving at high speed was quite a challenge. We managed to do something that no one has ever attempted before,” commented both players on their performance. This daring project is further proof of the long-term support Lexus provides to the world of tennis. For the past three seasons, the brand has been a platinum partner and the official automotive partner of the most important series in men’s professional tennis, the ATP Tour.
