Soft Power

Her fashion isn’t armour, but a silken thread. Designer Julie Haynaliy proves that true strength can be found in gentleness.

“I believe that what is often considered a woman’s weakness is, in fact, her greatest strength. Subtlety, tenderness, emotion – these are all qualities that make us exceptional.” This conviction held by designer Julie Haynaliy shapes every piece she designs for the brand that bears her surname. Both her work and her atelier on Prague’s Pařížská Street are a celebration of the strength hidden in fragility and a manifesto of a timeless elegance. She calls her approach ‘modest fashion’, but in her interpretation, it represents an enhancement of female personality through clothing rather than a rebellion against overt displays of exposure.

An example of this idea can be seen in her first collection, The Power of Delicacy, which the designer built on the contrast of black and white. It brings together the key elements of her signature style: bows and ruffles are not merely romantic embellishments but an expression of the wearer’s confidence, while structured corsets are balanced by the lightness of sheer fabrics and flowing silk. The collection also features asymmetrical cuts, such as in a long one-shoulder dress that hints at more than it reveals.

She always uses the highest quality natural materials like wool or silk in her work, the latter of which has become her hallmark. However, Julie Haynaliy’s path to a career as a fashion designer was not a direct one. She was fascinated by the craft as a child, watching in awe as her grandmother and her mother conjured new shapes from a piece of fabric or a ball of wool. Nevertheless, life first led her to study international relations. The turning point came during the pandemic, when she enrolled in a design academy. “I realised that it’s never too late to start doing what is your true path,” she recalls. The decision to start from scratch was difficult, she says, but in it, she found the strength to take a risk and follow her dream. Further impetus came with the birth of her third daughter. “She became a huge motivator for me. Thanks to her, I found the determination to develop the brand,” she adds.

Clothing as a Dialogue

Today she focuses on bespoke creation, which Julie Haynaliy sees as an intimate dialogue. “First, we talk about the occasion and how the client wants to feel in the garment,” she says, describing the process. Then they look through fabrics and colours, and the first sketches emerge. “It’s as if we’re starting to paint a picture together. One that is hers alone.” This personal atmosphere is enhanced by other senses – soft piano intertwined with modern electronica is playing in her atelier. “This is what my work is like – feminine and romantic, but anchored in the present.”

This feel for detail is also reflected in the ethical production in Czechia. “I want to know who is sewing my dresses and in what conditions,” she stresses. This gives her full control over the quality and the knowledge that every piece has not only an aesthetic but also a human value. “I want women to know that real strength is hidden in their fragility. And at the same time, I want to leave behind a legacy that shows that Czech workmanship can stand its ground anywhere in the world.”
