Holiday Designer

Robert Paul doesn’t sell catalogue dreams. The founder of the travel agency Luxusni-Dovolena.cz personally vets every hotel and experience to craft your perfect holiday.

Your company specialises in tailor-made luxury holidays. What does luxury in travel mean to you in 2025?
For me, luxury is primarily about time, privacy, and authenticity – having everything prepared so that you can focus fully on the experience. Our clients appreciate that we save them the hours they would have spent researching, and that we handle any crisis situations in a way that is stress-free for them. For us, luxury is a personal approach, knowledge of destinations down to the smallest detail, and the ability to design a holiday that is truly their own.

What is the guiding principle that you and your team of travel designers follow when planning a trip?
To get to know the client and their vision as well as possible, and then, based on our personal experiences, to prepare a trip that is perfectly suited to them. We always try to add something extra, to pleasantly surprise them, and to elevate the entire holiday to a higher level.

Your services go far beyond the usual standard – you handle visas, private helicopter flights. Is this what defines travel design?
True luxury travel design means the ability to understand the client in detail – their lifestyle, preferences, and dreams – and to assemble a journey that is perfectly personal and authentic. At the same time, we have first-hand experience of the destinations our clients travel to, so we can always design the most suitable solutions for them.

How often do you go on inspection trips and what do you look for?
Someone from the team is practically always abroad. We check every detail, from the quality of the beaches and gastronomy to the standard of cleaning, service, or the comfort of the beds. We conduct dozens of inspection trips annually to ensure we always have up-to-date and verified information. It’s not just about the overall impression of a destination, but about every little thing that can make or break the holiday experience. We even check the clarity of the sea, and we test the gastronomy and the wine lists… These are the small things that the average traveller often overlooks. Thanks to this, we can recommend what will best fulfil each client’s dream holiday.

Can you give a recent example of a resort that impressed you?
I have to mention Como Maalifushi in the Maldives, with dolphins right in front of the resort and an exceptional sense of tranquillity. Kudadoo is also exceptional with its motto of ‘Anything, Anytime, Anywhere’. From my recent trips, I was also captivated by Singita Kwitonda in Rwanda where, if you’re lucky, you can watch gorillas right from your breakfast table.

What does it mean for your clients that you are part of the Serandipians network?
Our clients are guaranteed exclusive complimentary benefits, whether it’s room upgrades, early check-in and late check-out, or VIP access to hotels all over the world. Thanks to our direct relationships with the general managers of the resorts, we can immediately handle special requests and any potential issues.

How do you choose your team members?
A passion for travel and a desire to help people are essential – you can’t do it without that. Communication and commercial skills, reliability, empathy, and sometimes the ability to handle a crisis situation calmly at three in the morning are also necessary.

What does the trip planning process look like, from the first meeting to the return?
First, we get a detailed understanding of the client’s wishes and options, then we select the ideal resort and prepare an offer. After booking, we arrange all the necessary documents in our app. We stay in contact during their stay, and after their return, we gather feedback, which helps us to perfect future trips.

How important is contact with clients?
From the beginning, we wanted to be the ‘family doctors of travel’, meaning we get to know the client in-depth and fine-tune every detail accordingly. In-person visits are useful at the start or for extremely complex and longer itineraries. Otherwise, we see them more as pleasant social get-togethers that give us a chance to better understand the client’s personality.

Are there any trends in luxury travel?
The Maldives still leads the way, but there is growing demand for wellbeing and longevity retreats. African destinations and safari holidays meet the desire for both privacy and unique experiences. Among European destinations, more and more clients are seeking out Lapland with its pristine winter scenery.

Wellness and longevity programmes – what can we imagine by that?
We tend to associate this with injections at clinics or supplements, but it’s actually a comprehensive approach to health and vitality. We offer trips with holistic programmes as well as cutting-edge medical therapies.

I assume that planning weddings or vow renewals in exotic destinations is a frequent request. What’s crucial with this type of brief?
The most important thing is precise preparation and a detailed agreement with the client on the scenario and timing. This ensures the ceremony becomes a true experience that will remain a lifelong memory.

What attracts clients to unique destinations like Bhutan or Rwanda?
In Bhutan, time slows down for you – their philosophy of happiness is completely different from ours. Rwanda is about that moment on a trek when you meet gorillas face-to-face. I guarantee that you will never forget the moment you look into their eyes for the rest of your life.

What is the biggest myth about the Maldives?
The Maldives is a destination where it’s most apparent that a star rating of a hotel may not correspond to the quality at all. You’ll find five-star hotels there that I would never send my clients to, and conversely, resorts with a lower rating that provide an incomparably better experience. Small details make a huge difference there, and online ratings are deceptive more often than not.

A safari in Botswana is a dream for many travellers. What shouldn’t they miss?
Imagine an orange sunset on a boat in the Okavango Delta as elephants wade among the water lilies in front of you. Or the sight of a leopard dozing on a branch above you as the sun goes down. A favourite moment of mine was having a meerkat use my lap as a lookout post to get a better view.

What is your opinion on Antarctica?
It’s a destination for anyone who loves nature and unique places. I don’t think we’ve had anyone we’ve had to talk out of the trip. It’s an expedition on a luxury ship with maximum comfort and excellent service, of course, provided you choose the right vessel.

How do you handle holidays for families of multiple generations?
We always start with the needs of each individual. Grandparents will appreciate accessibility, while children will enjoy kids’ clubs and nannies they know from previous years. We fine-tune every detail so that all members of the family feel comfortable.

Are you in constant contact with your clients?
Yes. Usually, they need just minor adjustments – extending a stay, changing the itinerary – but the client knows they can rely on us to arrange everything immediately.

What mistakes do people make when they plan a luxury holiday themselves?
They rely on reviews, which are often misleading. Unlike them, we know the destinations and hotels from personal trips and we know where the hidden gems, as well as the flaws, are. A holiday, like surgery, shouldn’t be a DIY project – a consultation with an expert will always yield a better result. People tend to think they can get lower prices themselves or online, when in fact the opposite is true.

What is the biggest challenge in travel today?
Air transport is an area over which we have no control. Whether it’s commercial airlines or private jets, our priority is always to react faster than anyone else and to ensure our clients’ peace of mind and safety.

What is your dream holiday?
There is now the option to visit the unique island of Aldabra in the Indian Ocean by ship, or an expedition to Palau on the Four Seasons Explorer.

What makes Luxusni-Dovolena.cz stand out?
Our team is made up of genuine specialists. A golf trip is prepared by an experienced golfer, underwater adventures are recommended by a diver. Every product has its own guarantor who understands it down to the last detail. As a result, clients can feel even the finest nuances that separate an ordinary holiday from a true experience. We are at home in the Maldives as we have personally visited more than 110 resorts, which gives us a unique ability to recommend the perfect island for our clients. We also focus on safaris, travelling twice a year to the most exclusive places in Africa. We are also increasingly dedicating space to wellbeing and longevity retreats, which Czechs are now beginning to discover to the fullest.
