Volvo knows well that safety isn’t just about stars in crash tests. It’s primarily about the feeling of peace and trust when you’re driving your loved ones. It’s the certainty that you are in a car designed with a single goal in mind – to protect human life. It is this philosophy that the automaker is now taking to a whole new level with the revolutionary multi-adaptive seatbelt.
This pioneering technology, a result of development at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre in Gothenburg, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, will first be integrated into the upcoming all-electric Volvo EX60 model in 2026. However, this is not just another technical improvement. It represents a fundamental shift towards personalized protection that changes the perception of safety from a technical parameter to a deeply emotional matter.
The new system uses real-time data from advanced sensors inside and outside the vehicle, allowing it to evaluate not only the specifics of a potential accident in milliseconds but, most importantly, to adapt to the specific person in the seat – their height, weight, body proportions, and current position. It utilizes up to eleven different “load profiles” that regulate the force applied to the body during an impact and are activated automatically depending on the situation.
In practice, this means that for a taller and heavier person, the belt will adjust for a higher load to reduce the risk of head injury, while for a smaller person, the tension will be gentler to minimize the danger of rib fractures. It’s tailor-made safety that understands the uniqueness of each crew member.
This innovation is part of a broader safety ecosystem that Volvo is constantly refining. The automaker even believes that data is the “new seatbelt,” with the potential to save millions more lives. Thanks to decades of real-world accident research and a massive database of over 80,000 actual cases, Volvo has unique knowledge that allows it to develop technologies exceeding standard legal requirements. It also enables them to produce cars that achieve the highest Top Safety Pick+ rating in IIHS tests.
Moreover, the multi-adaptive belt will continuously learn and improve through over-the-air updates. Artificial intelligence and the Volvo Superset platform will ensure that the latest findings from the road are immediately transferred to the vehicles – even those already in use. In this case, it’s not just an innovation, but a commitment that the car a person chooses provides the best possible protection – not just today, but for years to come.
The result is freedom and peace of mind, wherever you travel. It’s a feeling that is the true luxury in today’s world: safety for all – and for each individual.
