A Mechanical Fantasy with an Homage to Karel Čapek

There are watches that do more than measure time. They tell a story, carry a cultural legacy, and transform technical precision into an object of desire. That is precisely the impression created by the Antarctique Rattrapante ‘R.U.R.’ by Czapek & Cie — a timepiece that unites a high-watchmaking complication with playfulness, intellect, and an aesthetic powerful enough to hold the gaze.

At first glance, the grey-metallised sapphire dial immediately draws attention, revealing a fascinating mechanical world beneath its surface. Yet this time, that world belongs not only to gears, bridges, and the chronograph. At its centre appears a robot — a subtle, almost ironic detail that gives the model its singular character. Once the chronograph is activated, the robot’s eyes transform: yellow at start, red when stopped, blue on reset. Here, mechanics are not a hidden discipline reserved for connoisseurs. They become theatre.

This is precisely where the charm of this limited edition lies. Czapek has created not merely another exceptional watch, but an object that opens a dialogue between past and future, between the beauty of craftsmanship and the questions that may be more relevant today than ever before. The name R.U.R. refers to Karel Čapek’s iconic play, which gave the world the word robot a century ago. This cultural moment became the Maison’s inspiration for creating a model that is as intellectually compelling as it is visually captivating.

The robot on the dial is the result of the precise work of partner MD’Art and is, in itself, a miniature work of art. Its titanium head was cut, hand-polished, and laser-engraved, while the eyes were hand-painted in neon tones. Every detail underscores the contrast between technical austerity and playful imagination — a contrast so characteristic of Czapek.

Behind this aesthetic lightness lies an exceptionally sophisticated construction. Calibre SXH6, developed in collaboration with Jean-François Mojon of Chronode, turns the traditional logic of the rattrapante chronograph inside out. What is usually hidden on the underside of the movement is here revealed on the dial side. The split-seconds mechanism thus becomes the visual centre of the model, allowing its complexity to be admired in full view — from the horizontal clutch to the interplay of the two column wheels.

Yet this transparency is not an end in itself. Czapek uses it as a language of beauty. Form is not separated from function here; it grows from it. The robot is positioned directly on top of the chronograph’s column wheel, so that each press of a pusher is instantly translated into a change in eye colour. The result is an unexpectedly emotional interaction with a complication traditionally perceived more as a technical triumph than as a playful experience.

The R.U.R. model also conceals another layer of horological intelligence: an isolator, an ingenious mechanism that allows the two chronograph wheels to be separated without generating friction in the rest of the system. This reduces chronometric disturbances when using the split-seconds function and elevates the movement’s performance even further. In the language of luxury, it is exactly the kind of innovation that is not ostentatious, yet deeply significant.

On the reverse side of the case, visible through the sapphire caseback, the play of light and surfaces continues. An oscillating weight in recycled 5N rose gold, hand-polished bevels, satin-finished elements, and black-polished screws create a composition that confirms that for Czapek, haute horlogerie remains above all an art of detail. The composition is completed by a 42.5 mm case and integrated bracelet, whose brushed surfaces and polished links elegantly echo the architecture of the movement.

The Antarctique Rattrapante ‘R.U.R.’ is produced in a limited edition of 77 pieces. It is not a model for everyone — and that is precisely where its strength lies. It is intended for those who seek not only status in a watch, but an idea. For those who understand that true luxury is born not from ostentation, but from layers of meaning, emotion, and masterful craftsmanship.
